Who Is Carey Evans?

By Carey Evans, May 2004–September 2005.

I’m a computer geek living in Christchurch, New Zealand. I’m lucky enough to work in computers, doing many of the things I find interesting anyway. My name is pronounced /ˈkɛəriː/, that is, to rhyme with “Mary”, more or less.

I’m amazingly lucky to be married to Katrina.

My current interests include XML, CSS, Unicode, and various “popular science” topics. I share a passion for correct English usage with Katrina, especially regarding the apostrophe. (It’s really not that hard.)

Synopsis

I was born in Christchurch on 7 November 1975. My younger brother Tim was born in Ashburton two years later.

My family lived in Christchurch, Ashburton and Runanga before moving to Dunedin, where I went to primary school at Andersons Bay. We then moved back to Christchurch and later to Ohoka while I attended Breens Intermediate then Papanui High School.

From 1994 to 1996, I studied at the University of Canterbury Computer Science Department, and I graduated with a B.Sc. Honours degree.

While I was at high school, I worked at the Papanui Public Library and at various Noel Leeming stores. I got a weekend job in their I.T. department in my last year at University, during which time they “merged” with Bond and Bond and became Pacific Retail Group.

After finishing University, I started with PRG as an RPG programmer, and I’ve stayed with them since then. I’ve moved on from ILE RPG, via Net.Data to Java web applications, including the Noel Leeming online store.

Most recently I’ve gone back in time to DOS and C++, and my part of Pacific Retail Group was sold off as Noel Leeming Group again, so it looks like I’m back where I started.
